Surf Casting Combo for NZ Shore Fishing

This surf casting combo is designed for beginners who want a practical way to start bait fishing from the New Zealand shore. It includes the main gear needed to set up the line, attach a bait rig, add bait and cast from a beach, wharf, river mouth or shoreline.

The set is built around a 4.2m 3-piece PTN surfcasting rod and a large PTN EF9000 surfcasting reel. It also includes 28lb monofilament main line, 70lb shock leader, two 3oz breakaway sinkers, two 3/0 pre-tied dropper flasher rigs, snap swivels and elastic bait thread.

This gives new anglers a simple starter setup without needing to choose every part separately. It is suitable for general NZ shore bait fishing and can be used to target common species such as kahawai, gurnard, trevally, red cod, smaller snapper and other bait-feeding fish, depending on the area, bait, tide and conditions.

What Is Included

  • 1 x 4.2m 3-piece PTN surfcasting rod
  • 1 x PTN EF9000 surfcasting reel
  • 1 x 500m spool of 28lb / 13kg monofilament fishing line
  • 1 x 200m spool of 70lb / 35kg monofilament shock leader
  • 2 x 3oz / 88g breakaway sinkers
  • 2 x 3/0 pre-tied dropper flasher rigs
  • 1 x pack of 39mm snap swivels
  • 1 x spool of elastic bait thread

Please note: bait, beach rod holder, bucket, knife, fish measuring ruler and tackle box are not included. Images of combo components are not shown in their relative sizes to each other.

Why This Surf Casting Combo Works for Beginners

The 4.2m surfcasting rod gives useful length for fishing from the shore. A longer rod helps keep the line above small waves and gives better reach when casting from beaches, river mouths and open shoreline. The 3-piece design also makes the rod easier to transport and store.

The EF9000 reel is included because surfcasting needs more line capacity than a small spinning reel. A larger reel holds enough line for beach casting and gives the angler more room if a fish runs after taking the bait.

The 28lb monofilament line is used as the main line on the reel. Mono is a good choice for beginners because it is easier to handle than braid, has some stretch and is forgiving when casting or fighting fish.

The 70lb shock leader is tied between the main line and the rig. It gives extra strength when casting a sinker and bait. It also adds abrasion resistance near sand, shells, weed and rough ground.

The 3oz breakaway sinkers help hold the bait near the bottom, where many shore fish feed. The wire grip design helps the sinker hold in sand and light surf. The 3oz weight is also beginner friendly because it is heavy enough for many shore conditions but not too heavy for learning to cast.

The 3/0 pre-tied dropper flasher rigs make setup easier. The hooks and trace are already tied, so there is less rig making required before fishing. The 3/0 hook size is useful for general shore bait fishing with pilchard pieces, squid strips, bonito, mullet or shellfish bait.

The snap swivels make it easier to connect the rig to the shock leader. They also make it easier to change a rig or sinker without cutting and retying the whole setup.

The elastic bait thread helps hold soft bait onto the hook. This is especially useful with pilchard, squid, bonito, mullet and shellfish bait. It helps stop bait flying off during the cast and keeps it on the hook longer in the surf.

Where This Set Can Be Used

This surf casting combo is designed for saltwater shore fishing around New Zealand. It can be used from surf beaches, calm sandy beaches, river mouths, wharves, jetties, harbour edges, estuary entrances and safe shoreline fishing spots.

For beginners, calm beaches, wharves and river mouths are usually the easiest places to start. Rough surf, rocky ledges and strong currents can be more difficult and may require more experience, different sinkers or heavier specialised tackle.

What Fish Can Be Caught?

This set is designed for general bait fishing from the shore. It is not limited to one species. Depending on where you fish, it may catch kahawai, gurnard, trevally, red cod, smaller snapper, rig, elephant fish and other shore species.

Kahawai are often found around beaches, river mouths and wharves, especially when baitfish are present. Gurnard are commonly caught over sandy areas, channels and open beach ground. Trevally may be found around wharves, harbours, channels and shellfish areas.

Snapper can be caught from many northern and upper North Island shore spots, especially around low light, tide changes, channels, current and food sources. Red cod are common in cooler southern waters and sandy shore areas. Rig and elephant fish are often caught from suitable beaches using shellfish, crab-style bait or other natural bait.

The included 3/0 rigs are best for general shore fishing rather than very large baits. Anglers who later want to target larger snapper, rig, elephant fish or bigger surf species may choose to add larger hooks or stronger specialised rigs.

Casting Distance and Fish Within Range

Beginners do not need extreme casting distance to catch fish from the New Zealand shore. Many fish feed close enough to reach from the beach, especially around gutters, channels, holes, shellfish beds, river mouths and the edges of breaking waves.

With practice, many new surfcasters can fish useful water at around 30 to 60 metres. More experienced casters may cast further, depending on wind, sinker weight, bait size, rod loading and technique.

However, distance is only one part of shore fishing. Casting into the right water is more important than simply casting as far as possible. Kahawai may come close to shore when chasing baitfish. Gurnard can feed over reachable sandy channels. Snapper may move into shore-accessible areas during low light or tide changes. Rig and elephant fish can also come within casting range on suitable beaches.

How to Set Up the Surf Casting Combo

  1. Assemble the 3-piece rod and make sure the guides are lined up.
  2. Attach the EF9000 reel securely to the reel seat.
  3. Spool the reel with the 28lb monofilament main line.
  4. Leave a small gap below the spool lip so the reel is not overfilled.
  5. Tie a length of 70lb shock leader to the main line.
  6. Use enough shock leader to wrap around the reel spool several times, with extra length running down through the rod guides.
  7. Tie a snap swivel to the end of the shock leader.
  8. Clip one 3/0 dropper flasher rig to the snap swivel.
  9. Attach one 3oz breakaway sinker to the bottom of the rig.
  10. Add bait to the hooks and wrap it with elastic bait thread.
  11. Check that nobody is behind or beside you before casting.
  12. Cast smoothly rather than forcing the rod.
  13. Place the rod in a beach rod holder or hold it securely while waiting for a bite.

Recommended Baits

Good beginner bait options include pilchard, squid, bonito, mullet, mussel and shellfish bait where collection is allowed. Pilchard and bonito are oily and can help attract fish. Squid is tougher and stays on the hook well. Bait elastic is useful when using soft bait, oily bait or larger bait pieces.

Do You Need a Float?

This set is designed for bottom fishing with a sinker and dropper rig. A large freshwater-style float is not needed for this setup.

The sinker holds the rig near the bottom, while the hooks sit above it. This is a common shore bait fishing method for beaches, river mouths and wharves.

Beginner Fishing Tips

  • Fish around early morning, evening or tide changes where possible.
  • Look for darker channels, gutters, holes and wave edges.
  • Use bait elastic to keep bait secure during the cast.
  • Check your bait every 10 to 15 minutes if there are no bites.
  • Move spots if there is no action after a reasonable time.
  • Do not cast near people, pets, swimmers or other anglers.
  • Always check local size and bag limits before keeping fish.

Important NZ Fishing Note

No licence is required for recreational sea fishing in New Zealand. However, local size limits, catch limits, closed areas and method rules still apply. Always check the current MPI fishing rules before keeping any fish.
