Choosing the Right Surfcasting Rod

The best option depends on the casting weight you require, how compact the rod needs to be and whether you already own a suitable reel and tackle.

PHISHGER 3.6m Telescopic Surfcasting Rod

This is the lightest and shortest rod in the range. It weighs approximately 343g, extends to 3.6m and closes to about 83cm. Its manageable length suits anglers who want good casting reach without the extra size of a 4.2m rod.

The fast-action 30T carbon rod has an 80–150g casting rating. It can handle many common 3–5oz surfcasting sinkers, provided the combined weight of the sinker, rig and bait remains within the rating. A 5000-size spinning reel is a suitable match.

PHISHGER 4.2m Telescopic Surfcasting Rod

Choose this model when additional casting reach and keeping the line above shoreline wash are more important. It extends to 4.2m but closes to approximately 89cm, making it considerably easier to transport than a traditional long-section surf rod.

It weighs approximately 376g and shares the 80–150g casting rating, fast action and 30T carbon construction of the 3.6m version. Its longer length is particularly useful on open beaches and is well matched with a 7000-size spinning reel.

4.2m Three-Piece Surfcasting Rod

The three-piece rod has an MH medium-hard action and a wider 100–200g casting range. It is the better rod-only option for heavier bait, rig and sinker combinations. Each section measures approximately 145cm, so check that it will fit in your vehicle or storage area.

This rod weighs approximately 670g and suits anglers who already own a compatible surfcasting reel or want to select every part of their setup separately.

4.2m Rod and EF9000 Reel Combo

This combination includes the three-piece 4.2m rod and an EF9000 saltwater spinning reel. It suits buyers who need both main components but want to choose their own fishing line, leader, rigs and sinkers.

The reel is not supplied pre-wound with line. Line and terminal tackle must be purchased separately before the combination can be used.

4.2m Surfcasting Starter Set

The starter set is the most complete option for someone beginning surfcasting without existing equipment. It includes the 4.2m three-piece rod, EF9000 reel, 500m of 28lb monofilament line, 70lb shock leader, two 3oz breakaway sinkers, two 3/0 flasher rigs, snap swivels and bait elastic.

The reel will still need to be spooled and the rig assembled before fishing. Bait, a beach rod holder, knife, measuring equipment and tackle box are not included.

Telescopic or Three-Piece Construction?

• Telescopic rods: Best when compact transport, lighter weight and convenient storage are priorities.
• Three-piece rod: Better when you require the wider 100–200g casting range and do not mind carrying sections approximately 145cm long.
• 3.6m length: Easier to handle and suitable for beaches, estuaries, harbour entrances and other shore-based locations.
• 4.2m length: Provides more leverage for casting and helps hold the line above waves and shoreline wash.

Understanding Casting-Weight Ratings

A rod rating applies to the total weight being cast, not just the sinker. Include the sinker, bait, hooks and rig when calculating the load. Avoid exceeding the stated rating, as overloading can damage the rod and make casting less controlled.

Caring for Surfcasting Rods

After saltwater use, rinse the rod, guides, reel seat and reel with fresh water. Allow everything to dry before collapsing or separating the rod for storage. Check that telescopic sections are secure and all guides are correctly aligned before every cast.
