Choosing Between Our Surfcasting Rods and Combos
The surfcasting rods in this range are based around a 4.2m, three-piece carbon fibre and resin fibre rod. Its MH medium-hard action and 100g to 200g casting rating suit heavier bait rigs commonly used for beach and shore fishing.
The main difference between the available products is how much additional fishing equipment is included. Your best option depends on whether you already own a suitable surf reel, line and terminal tackle.
4.2m Surfcasting Rod Only
The 4.2m three-piece surfcasting rod suits anglers who already have a suitable reel or prefer to select their reel, line and tackle separately.
The rod weighs approximately 670g and separates into three sections measuring about 145cm each. This makes it easier to transport and store than a one-piece beach fishing rod. No reel, fishing line, rigs or sinkers are included.
Surfcasting Rod and Reel Combo
The surfcasting rod and reel combo combines the 4.2m rod with an EF9000 alloy saltwater reel. This option suits anglers who need both main components but want to select their own line, leader, hooks, rigs and sinkers.
The EF9000 has 12 bearings, a 4.1:1 gear ratio and a larger reel body suited to the line capacity required for shore fishing. Fishing line is not included with this combo.
Surf Casting Starter Set
The surf casting starter set is the most suitable choice for a beginner who does not already own surfcasting equipment.
It includes the 4.2m rod, EF9000 reel, 500m of 28lb monofilament main line, 70lb shock leader, two 3oz breakaway sinkers, two 3/0 flasher rigs, snap swivels and elastic bait thread.
This set provides the core equipment needed to assemble a line and cast bait from the shore. Bait, a beach rod holder, knife, bucket, measuring ruler and tackle box are not included.
Why Use a 4.2m Surfcasting Rod?
A 4.2m surfcasting rod provides additional casting leverage compared with a shorter general-purpose fishing rod. Its length also helps keep the fishing line above shallow waves and shoreline wash when the rod is held or placed in a beach rod holder.
The longer rod is particularly useful on open beaches, river mouths and coastal shorelines where anglers may need to cast beyond breaking waves or into visible channels and gutters.
The three-piece construction makes the rod more practical for carrying in a vehicle. However, each section is approximately 145cm long, so storage and transport space should still be considered.
Where Can These Surfcasting Rods Be Used?
These rods and combos are intended for saltwater fishing from New Zealand beaches and other safe shore-based locations. They may also be used from river mouths, harbour edges, wharves and open shoreline fishing spots where a long rod is suitable.
Common target species may include snapper, kahawai, gurnard, trevally, red cod, rig, elephant fish and other coastal species. The fish available will depend on the region, season, water depth, bait, tide and local conditions.
Which Surfcasting Option Should You Choose?
- Choose the rod only when you already own a suitable surfcasting reel and want to build your own setup.
- Choose the rod and reel combo when you need the two main components but prefer to select your own line and terminal tackle.
- Choose the starter set when you need the rod, reel, line, leader, rigs, sinkers, swivels and bait elastic together.
Whichever option you select, check the rod sections and guides are aligned before casting. Rinse the rod, reel and metal tackle with fresh water after saltwater use, then allow everything to dry before storage.
