Baitcastor Combo Pack – 2.58m Rod, Left-Side Reel, 20lb Braid & Leader
Longer-Reach Baitcastor Combo Pack for NZ Shore Fishing
This baitcastor combo pack combines a longer 2.58m six-piece baitcasting rod with a fast 7.1:1 left-side handle reel, 300m of 20lb yellow braided line and 120m of 21.34lb fluorocarbon-coated leader.
Compared with our lighter 2.1m combo, this setup gives you additional rod length, a higher lure rating and stronger main line. It is a good choice for anglers fishing open harbour shorelines, estuaries and other locations where extra casting reach and the ability to work heavier lures are useful.
The supplied 20lb braid matches the upper end of the rod's 8–20lb line rating, while the slightly stronger 21.34lb leader adds abrasion resistance around rocks, pylons, shellfish and other underwater structure.
What's Included in this Baitcastor Combo Pack?
- 1 × 2.58m Six-Piece Baitcaster Fishing Rod
- 1 × 7.1:1 Left-Side Handle Baitcasting Reel
- 1 × 300m Yellow 20lb Braided Fishing Line
- 1 × 120m 21.34lb Fluorocarbon-Coated Leader Line
2.58m Six-Piece Baitcasting Rod
The longer 2.58m rod provides extra reach compared with the 2.1m version, making it particularly useful when fishing from open banks and shorelines where there is enough room for a longer casting stroke.
Despite the additional assembled length, the six-piece construction allows the rod to pack down to approximately 48cm. This makes it practical to carry in a vehicle, larger backpack or fishing gear bag.
Its 10–42g lure rating also allows you to step up to heavier metal lures, weighted softbaits and other artificial lures when conditions call for more casting weight.
Rod specifications:
- Assembled length: 2.58m
- Six-piece construction
- Packed length: approximately 48cm
- Rod weight: approximately 160g
- Lure rating: 10–42g
- Line rating: 8–20lb
- 8 line guides plus tip guide
- Trigger-style baitcasting reel seat
- Black split grip with red accents
- Red reel locking collar
Why Choose the 2.58m Version?
The main advantage of this rod over the shorter 2.1m version is extra reach and increased lure capacity.
Choose the 2.58m setup when:
- You are fishing from an open beach, harbour edge or lake bank with plenty of casting room.
- You want additional rod length to help guide a lure around shoreline weed or rocks.
- You want to cast heavier 20–35g metal lures for kahawai.
- You regularly use lures above the 30g maximum of the shorter rod.
- You want stronger 20lb braid rather than the 12lb line supplied with our lighter combo.
The 2.1m version remains the better option where vegetation, wharf structures or limited casting space make a shorter rod easier to manoeuvre.
7.1:1 Left-Side Handle Baitcasting Reel
This combo includes the left-side handle version of our black and gold baitcasting reel.
The handle is positioned on the left side, which means you wind the reel with your left hand while holding the rod in your right hand.
This configuration is particularly convenient for many right-handed casters because you can cast with the rod in your right hand and immediately begin retrieving without transferring the rod to your other hand.
Reel specifications:
- Left-side winding handle
- Left-hand retrieve
- 7.1:1 gear ratio
- 12+1 bearing configuration
- Stated maximum drag: 20lb
- Weight: approximately 230g
- Alloy construction
- Black and gold finish
- 0.26mm line capacity: approximately 210m
- 0.28mm line capacity: approximately 180m
- 0.30mm line capacity: approximately 140m
The reel's stated 20lb maximum drag should not be treated as the normal drag setting for this combo. Adjust your drag to suit the line, leader, knots, rod and fishing conditions.
300m of 20lb Yellow Braided Main Line
This longer combo steps up from the 12lb braid used with our 2.1m rod to 20lb braid.
The supplied line has a diameter of only 0.16mm, giving you additional strength without using unnecessarily thick main line.
Its low stretch provides direct lure control and good bite transmission, while the bright yellow colour helps you visually track the line when casting, retrieving or working a lure through current.
Braid specifications:
- Breaking strength: 20lb / approximately 9.1kg
- Diameter: 0.16mm
- Length: 300m
- Construction: 4-strand PE braid
- Colour: Yellow
The 20lb breaking strain sits at the upper end of the rod's stated 8–20lb line range, making it a sensible choice for the heavier-duty version of this bundle.
21.34lb Fluorocarbon-Coated Leader
The supplied leader is also stepped up to suit the stronger main line.
At 21.34lb and 0.35mm diameter, it provides additional abrasion protection between the fine braided main line and your lure.
The nylon core is fluorocarbon coated to provide a less visible terminal section while retaining good knot performance and resistance to damage around rough structure.
Leader specifications:
- Strength: 21.34lb / approximately 9.6kg
- Diameter: 0.35mm
- Length: 120m
- Colour: Clear / white
- Nylon core with fluorocarbon coating
This stronger leader is particularly useful around:
- Rocks and reef edges
- Wharf and bridge pylons
- Shell-covered structure
- Submerged timber
- Harbour structure
- Rough estuary margins
Why 20lb Braid and 21.34lb Leader?
This line combination has been selected specifically for the longer rod.
The rod is rated for 8–20lb line, so the supplied 20lb braid remains within its stated range while providing greater strength than the 12lb braid used on our lighter 2.1m combo.
The 21.34lb leader is only slightly stronger than the main line, providing additional abrasion protection close to your lure without turning the setup into an unnecessarily heavy outfit.
This combination is well suited to casting heavier artificial lures in typical NZ harbour and light coastal conditions.
What Lures Can You Use?
The rod is rated for artificial lures weighing from 10–42g.
This makes it suitable for:
- 20–35g metal casting lures for kahawai
- Weighted softbaits
- Compact jigs
- Hard-body lures
- Spoons
- Sinking minnows
- Other artificial lures within the 10–42g total casting weight
When using a softbait, remember that the rod rating applies to the complete casting weight. Include the jighead, soft plastic and any additional weight when calculating the total.
Where to Use This Combo in New Zealand
The additional rod length makes this setup particularly useful where you have an open shoreline and want more reach.
Examples include:
- Waitematā Harbour – cast 20–35g metal lures when kahawai are chasing bait within shore-casting range.
- Manukau Harbour – lure fishing from accessible open shoreline areas and channels.
- Tauranga Harbour – working softbaits, metal lures and hard-body lures around channels and harbour margins.
- Wellington Harbour – shore casting for kahawai and other light inshore species.
- Open lake shorelines – casting spoons and hardbaits where lure fishing is permitted.
- Estuary margins – particularly where additional rod length helps keep line clear of shoreline structure.
The setup is stronger than our 2.1m combo, but it is still intended as a medium lure-fishing outfit rather than a heavy kingfish or heavy rock-fishing setup.
Left-Side Handle – Who Is It For?
The reel included with this baitcastor combo set has its winding handle on the left side.
Choose this version if you want to:
- Cast with the rod in your right hand.
- Keep the rod in your right hand after the cast.
- Wind the reel using your left hand.
- Begin retrieving without swapping the rod between hands.
If you prefer to wind with your right hand, choose the right-side handle version instead.
A Longer-Range Baitcaster Setup for NZ Anglers
This baitcastor combo pack is designed for anglers who want more casting reach and heavier lure capability than the shorter 2.1m outfit while retaining the convenience of a compact multi-piece rod.
The 2.58m rod provides the reach for open shoreline fishing, the 7.1:1 left-side reel provides fast line pickup, the 20lb braid matches the upper end of the rod's line rating, and the 21.34lb leader adds useful abrasion resistance close to your lure.
With all four core components matched together, you only need to add suitable 10–42g lures and your preferred terminal tackle to build a practical NZ harbour, estuary and light coastal baitcasting outfit.
