Knee Sleeves NZ Buyer’s Guide
Not every knee support provides the same level of structure. Our range goes from lightweight pull-on sleeves through to adjustable, gel padded and hinged designs. The best choice depends on how much support you want, how you plan to use it and the fit you prefer.
Which Knee Support Should You Choose?
Basic compression sleeve: Choose a pull-on compression sleeve when you want a lightweight option that sits close to the leg. These are well suited to walking, gym training, sport, work and everyday movement without the bulk of straps or rigid side supports.
Adjustable strap support: Choose an adjustable design when you want to control how firmly the support sits around your knee. The crossover straps provide a more secure fit than a simple pull-on sleeve while still allowing plenty of movement.
Gel knee brace with spring stabilisers: This is a useful middle option when you want more structure than a standard sleeve. The gel ring sits around the kneecap, while flexible spring stabilisers run along the sides of the knee.
Open patella knee brace: An open patella design leaves the centre of the kneecap exposed. Consider this style if you prefer adjustable straps and do not want material pressing directly across the front of the kneecap.
Hinged knee brace: Choose the hinged version when you want the most structured option within this range. Steel side plates provide considerably more lateral structure than our soft compression and spring-stabilised designs. Adjustable straps also help hold the brace securely in position.
Comparing the Different Designs
- Lightest and least bulky: standard compression sleeve.
- Adjustable compression: strapped knee support.
- Extra kneecap and side support: gel padded sleeve with spring stabilisers.
- Open kneecap design: adjustable open patella brace.
- Most structured option: hinged brace with steel side plates.
How to Choose the Correct Size
Check the size chart on the individual product page before ordering. Our different knee supports do not all use exactly the same measurement method, so do not assume that the same size will fit across every design.
Use a soft measuring tape and measure your leg at the point shown in the relevant product guide. Keep the tape comfortably against your skin without pulling it tight. If your measurement is close to the boundary between two sizes, consider whether you prefer firmer compression or a slightly more relaxed fit.
How Should a Knee Sleeve Fit?
A compression sleeve should feel firm and secure without causing pain or restricting circulation. It should remain in position as you bend your knee and should not bunch excessively behind the joint.
Adjustable and hinged braces should also feel secure, but avoid overtightening the straps. Stop using a support if you experience numbness, tingling, increased swelling or unusual discomfort.
Knee Support for Sport, Work and Everyday Use
For gym sessions, walking and general activity, a lightweight compression sleeve may provide all the support you want. Adjustable straps can be useful when you want a firmer feel during movement. Buyers wanting additional side structure can consider the spring-stabilised or hinged options.
Knee supports are not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment. If you have an injury, persistent knee pain, significant swelling or a medical condition affecting the joint or circulation, seek advice from an appropriate health professional before choosing a brace.
