How to Choose the Right Spinning Reel
The best spinning reel depends on where you fish, the rod length, line capacity needed, and the species you are targeting. Smaller reels suit trout and light freshwater work, while larger reels provide more line capacity and stronger drag for coastal fishing.
Spinning Reel Size Guide
- 1000 size reels: Best for small trout streams, light line, and short spinning rods around 1.8m to 2.1m.
- 2000 size reels: A good all-round trout reel size for rivers, lakes, and general freshwater spinning.
- 3000 size reels: Suits larger rivers, lake edges, light soft bait use, and rods around 2.1m to 2.4m.
- 5000 size reels: Better for kahawai, river mouths, light surf fishing, and general coastal use.
- 7000 to 9000 size reels: Made for heavier saltwater work, including beach, harbour, rock, and surfcasting setups.
Freshwater Spinning Reels
For trout fishing in NZ streams and lakes, a 1000 or 2000 size reel is usually the best match. These smaller reels keep the rod balanced, make light lures easier to cast, and work well with lighter mono or braid.
Coastal and Surf Spinning Reels
For kahawai, snapper, trevally, and general coastal fishing, look at the 5000 size and above. These reels carry more line, handle longer casts, and offer stronger drag for fish that run harder in open water.
Matching Reel Size to Your Rod
A reel that is too large can make a rod feel heavy and slow. A reel that is too small may not hold enough line for beach or rock fishing. As a guide, match 1000 to 2000 reels with light trout rods, 3000 to 5000 reels with medium spinning rods, and 7000 to 9000 reels with longer surf or coastal rods.
Saltwater Care
After saltwater use, rinse the reel lightly with fresh water, dry it, and store it away from sand and moisture. This helps protect the bearings, drag system, spool, and handle from corrosion.
