Fishing Hooks Buyer Guide

Choosing the right fishing hook depends on the bait, target species and water being fished. This category includes small hook packs, larger assorted hook sets and barbless hooks for anglers building or topping up a tackle box.

Choosing Hook Size

Hook sizing can be confusing because smaller numbered hooks are not always smaller across every style. As a general guide, match the hook to the bait first. The hook should hold the bait securely while still leaving enough point exposed for a clean hook-up.

• Small hook packs: Useful for lighter bait presentations, freshwater fishing and smaller-mouthed fish.
• Size #8 and #13 hooks: Practical sizes for general bait fishing and mixed tackle boxes.
• Assorted hook packs: Good when you want several sizes available for changing bait, rigs or fishing spots.
• Barbless hooks: Useful for catch-and-release fishing and waters where barbless hooks are required.

Barbless Hooks

Barbless hooks are easier to remove and can reduce handling time when releasing fish. They are a sensible option for trout fishing, catch-and-release sessions and responsible fishing where fish welfare matters.

Match Hooks to Bait

For small baits, use a smaller hook so the bait sits naturally. For larger baits, choose a hook with enough gap to leave the point clear. If the bait hides the hook point, missed bites are more likely.

Hook Storage Tip

Keep hooks dry after use and store different sizes separately where possible. Saltwater can quickly mark hooks, so rinse and dry your tackle box if it has been exposed to spray, rain or wet bait.
