Buyer’s Guide: Choosing Mono Line Fishing Line

Mono line is a popular choice because it is easy to tie, forgiving under pressure, and suitable for many New Zealand fishing styles. The best option depends on the species, water conditions, rod setup, and the amount of abrasion you expect from rocks, weed, shellfish, or structure.

8lb Mono Line

The 8lb option suits lighter trout fishing in rivers, streams, and lake edges. Its thinner diameter helps with natural lure movement and longer casts from light spinning rods. It is a good choice when fish are cautious, water is clear, or smaller trout are the main target.

10lb Mono Line

The 10lb option gives more strength while still staying light enough for trout lures, soft baits, and small spinners. Choose this when fishing near weed beds, submerged timber, rocky edges, or deeper lake margins where extra control is useful.

28.7lb Mono Line

The 28.7lb clear mono is better suited to heavier general fishing, including wharf, harbour, estuary, boat, and light surfcasting setups. It may suit kahawai, gurnard, trevally, smaller snapper, and rigs where stronger main line or trace line is preferred.

70lb Mono Line

The 70lb mono is the strongest option in this category. It is suited to heavier traces, shock leaders, surfcasting rigs, rock fishing, and situations where abrasion resistance matters more than fine presentation. It is not the best choice for cautious trout in clear water.

Green or Clear Mono?

Green line can blend well around weed, river edges, and darker lake water. Clear mono is a practical all-round choice when you want a less visible line across mixed water conditions. For clear trout water, thinner diameter is usually more important than colour alone.

Which Line Should You Choose?

  • Choose 8lb for clear water trout and light lure fishing.
  • Choose 10lb for trout around weed, rocks, or bigger lake fish.
  • Choose 28.7lb for stronger estuary, harbour, wharf, or light saltwater use.
  • Choose 70lb for heavy traces, leaders, surfcasting, and rough ground.

If you are setting up one light trout reel, 8lb or 10lb is the better match. For saltwater rigs, heavier traces, or rougher ground, move up to the stronger mono options.
