Bike Stems Buying Guide

Bike stems connect the handlebar to the fork’s steerer tube. Changing the design, length or angle can alter your reach, handlebar height and steering response. Compatibility should therefore be checked before selecting a length or colour.

Check the Handlebar and Steerer Diameters

Two measurements must match your bike:

  • Handlebar clamp diameter: Measure the thicker centre section where the handlebar sits inside the stem. The products on this page are available for 25.4mm or 31.8mm handlebars.
  • Steerer tube diameter: The current range is designed for a 28.6mm threadless steerer tube, commonly referred to as 1 1/8 inch.

Do not measure the handlebar near the grips because this section is usually narrower than the centre clamp area.

Short MTB Stems

A short stem brings the handlebar closer to the steerer tube when replacing a longer model. This can reduce how far the rider must reach and may produce a more direct steering feel. It can suit mountain-bike riders who feel overly stretched or want a compact cockpit.

The short 31.8mm model is available in black, red, blue, green and yellow. Check the listed delivery status because some colours may be supplied by backorder.

Adjustable High-Rise Stems

The adjustable models allow the angle to be changed from 0 to 90 degrees. Raising the angle moves the handlebar upwards and can support a more upright riding position. A lower setting produces a flatter position and generally places more weight towards the front of the bike.

An adjustable design can be useful when you are uncertain about the ideal handlebar height or when comfort requirements change. Once the preferred position has been established, all adjustment bolts must be tightened securely.

How Stem Length Changes Your Position

At the same angle, a shorter model generally places the handlebar closer to the rider, while a longer model places it further forward. The 60mm options provide the shortest listed adjustable length, while the 100mm model provides the longest.

The effective reach will also change as the angle is raised. Therefore, the stated stem length should not be treated as the exact horizontal distance between the steerer tube and handlebar.

Check Cables and Brake Hoses

Raising the handlebar can use additional cable or hydraulic-hose length. After fitting or adjusting the stem, turn the handlebar fully in both directions. Brake hoses, gear cables and electrical wires must not become tight, pull against their fittings or restrict steering.

Installation and Safety Checks

  • Check that the handlebar and steerer tube are the correct diameters.
  • Inspect the handlebar and steerer tube for cracks, deep scratches or other damage.
  • Centre the handlebar before tightening the faceplate.
  • Tighten faceplate bolts gradually and evenly in a cross pattern.
  • Align the stem with the front wheel before securing the steerer-clamp bolts.
  • Follow the stated torque settings where they are marked on the components.
  • Test the steering and brakes before completing a longer ride.

Incorrectly fitted bike stems can affect steering control. A bicycle mechanic should complete the installation when compatibility, alignment or the correct bolt torque is uncertain.
